Abstract Atmospheric rivers (ARs) are essential yet hazardous components of the global water cycle. Despite the development of multiple classification frameworks, their interconnections remain unexplored. Here, we present the first global quantification of the statistical linkages among AR classifications based on oscillation frequency, moisture‐wind contributions, and association with extratropical cyclones. These findings imply a unified ‘wind‐driven, cyclone‐associated’ archetype, marked by significant convergence among high‐frequency, windy, and cyclone‐related ARs. Non‐cyclone‐related ARs represent a broad residual category with mixed characteristics. Composite lifecycle analysis further shows that wind contribution generally increases during AR evolution, while oscillation frequency remains relatively stable. This integrated framework bridges fragmented understandings of AR diversity, providing a consolidated reference for forecasting and climate modeling.
